What if You Resolved to Be More Kind to Yourself in 2020? | Michigan Boudoir Photography

Updated: Oct 21, 2020

Lately, there’s been a lot of pushback on making “resolutions,” but I think it’s natural to think about the passage of time when we cross over that new year mark.  I like to think of them less as resolutions, and more like observations.

What do you observe about yourself this last year?

What are you proud of? What do you wish you did more of?

A positive mindset is so powerful, but it takes practice. It’s actually easier to be mindful of other people than to give that grace to ourselves. As women, we’re trained from an early age to bring comfort and to be mindful of other people’s feelings before our own.

We are also often the first people to treat ourselves with less grace than others.  We look in the mirror and wish we were not so ________ (fill in the blank).

We compare ourselves to others.

What if you could break that habit, just a bit in 2020?

Make a promise to yourself that for one week, you will stop and take notice of how you “speak” to yourself. For every comparison you make, give yourself a compliment.

“I wish I had legs like hers.”

to

“My legs are strong and muscular, and I can carry a toddler up the stairs with ease.”

“I really should eat a salad for lunch.”

To

“I’m noting what I am fueling my body with so I can make positive changes.”

If it sounds a little weird and woo-woo to you, I get it. It’s harder than you think! But, once you employ this mindset, the most amazing things start to happen to you.

You sit up a little straighter, and you feel a bit better about the world around you. I know that once I began doing this, the comparisons lessened, and something even more powerful happened…I started to compliment people more.

The power of receiving a heartfelt compliment is mighty. When people get complimented, you can see the happiness in their body language, their eyes, and right down to their soul.  Practice giving those compliments to yourself…and meaning them.

At boudoir sessions every week I see transformations. Women accepting themselves a bit more, accepting their bodies.  For some of them, it took a great leap of faith to get here, and for that, I am so very grateful. By booking a session, whether they knew it or not, they were being kind to themselves.

One week. Can you give yourself the gift of one week of kindness?  I think you’ll see the world quite differently after that week. I’d love to hear from you on how you felt!
